Abstract
The p53 protein is a 53-kDa nuclear phosphoprotein originally discovered in virus-transformed cells. It has a tumor suppressor function. Overexpression of mutant p53 protein is a common feature of invasive epithelial ovarian cancers.
The aim of this study was to examine the potential role of mutated p53 protein in ovarian carcinogenesis and to evaluate its role as a prognostic marker.
Immunohistochemical staining for p53 was performed in frozen samples of 39 common epithelial ovarian cancers.
@ES The obtained results are summarizd as follows:
@EN 1. Overexpression of p53 was observed in 19/39(48.7%) epithelial ovarian cancers.
2. There was no correlation between p53 expression and age, histlogic type and tumor grade in epithelial ovarian cancer.
3. There was significant relationship between p53 expression and tumor stage.
4. There was significant relationship between p53 expression and 5-year survival rate.
It is suggested that mutation of the p53 gene is associated with genesis and progression of ovarian cancer.
